Biography:
Magalhães is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and hails from Gracie Humaita in Rio de Janeiro, the school founded by Helio Gracie and his sons. He is a multiple time champion in BJJ and has been invited to participate in events from the Professional Submission League, including an encounter against Vladimir Matyushenko. In one PSL event, he defeated ADCC Champion Robert Drysdale. His nickname, "Pezão", means "Big Foot". He accomplished an equally impressive submission win over BJJ notable, Bruno Bastos, at a Grappler's Quest Pro Tournament event by way of heel hook.
In Gi BJJ tournaments he is a three time world champion in the heavy weight, super heavy weight, and absolute divisions. He is a two time Brazilian National Heavy weight champion, a six time Rio De Janeiro State Champion in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005.He is also the US Open Champion and 2007 Grapplers Quest West Coast Champion. In 2007 Vinny also became the North American Tournament Champion in no gi submission grappling. Vinny is also the winner of the Pan-American Grappling Championship.
Vinny currently trains and teaches at TapouT Training Center where he continues training in Jiu Jitsu as well as Wrestling, Muay Thai, and Boxing.
The Ultimate Fighter
Vinny Magalhães defeated Lance Evans the brother of Rashad Evans when Evans quits after the first round due to a rib injury. Vinny defeated Jules Bruchez by armbar in the first round to move to the semi finals. Vinny then fought Krzysztof Soszynski. Vinny defeated Soszynski by armbar in the first round. He moved on to the finale against Ryan Bader losing by knockout.
Ultimate Fighting Championship
Vinny Magalhães lost his UFC debut at TUF finals against former The Ultimate Fighter: Team Nogueira vs. Team Mir cast mate Ryan Bader. This fight was on the main card at the UFC: The Ultimate Fighter 8 Finale. Vinny's next fight was at UFC 97 taking on his former The Ultimate Fighter castmate Eliot Marshall. Elliot Marshall won by a unanimous decision.
